Our Epic Journey from Georgetown to Iwokrama

Monday March 4th 2013
Blog Posters: Knoel Blake and Kel Campbell
Our day started before the sun even thought about shining a ray, all the while we were busy packing up to head out to Iwokrama.   We finished loading and were all packed in the van around six, 13 people, 20 suitcases and 12 day bags…tight is an understatement.  After a about an hour and half trek we were out of Georgetown and our real adventure began as the van tires hit the red dirt road.  Luckily our driver by the name of Geoffrey, has his P.H.D. (Pot hole dodger) and so we were able to escape losing any car parts or breakfast, ha,ha!  It took about 9 hours to cover the distance to Iwokrama and boy did we find ways to pass the time.  Some of us slept, others talked, but the best was the fabulous and spontaneous karaoke session.  Chris the master vocalist had us all chiming in on various tunes.  So much fun!!  Luckily Geoffrey either had a great sense of humor or was completely tone deaf because we managed to keep our seats on board the bus.  As we neared the Essequibo River we came upon a road block that presented itself in the form of a large fallen tree that threw itself down across the road. Our brave driver helped clear the path with a chainsaw and machete.  Before long we were back on the road again, shortly after we boarded the ferry to cross the river to reach Iwokrama. With a break outside of the van, while on the ferry, our spirits were refreshed by the fresh air and beautiful scenery of the river. With a new eagerness in reaching our destination we loaded back in the van and shortly after arrived at the absolutely beautiful Iwokrama River Lodge. We were surprisingly welcomed with cold towels and fresh passion fruit juice. You could say we thought we were in the lap of luxury. Excited to be here we grabbed a quick bite, settled in with lightning speed and headed out for a much awaited nature walk. We now are about to head to dinner and look forward to our night river cruise. Keep up with the blog for the next update.
